Hi. I've read a number of very good Lassiter/O'Hara fanfics so far this year that haven't been cross-posted or linked to this community. So, I wanted to compile a recommendations list and share the love.
(Also, I noticed that this would be the 100th post in this community, and I'm far too compulsive to let the community stay at an uneven number like 99. Mr. Monk and I have to have things divisible by 10.)Recs are arranged in alphabetical order by title.Title: baby the stars shine brightAuthor: ifreet @ AO3 [who I assume is
ifreet @ LJ]
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Note: Crossover with
The Walking DeadRec: Technically, I'm starting off with a cheat, because this fic is Shawn/Lassie. However, Shawn never actually appears in the story, and all the slash (which is minimal) is limited to Lass's thoughts. The focus of the story is Carlton and Juliet's friendship as they survive the zombie apocalypse together. I love the camaraderie in this story, and how Juliet is written as hardened by her post-apocalyptic experience but still recognizably affable.
Title: Carlton Lassiter’s Guide to Trauma Recovery, Sprinting, Finding Your Soulmate, and Losing Ten Pounds Without Leaving Santa BarbaraAuthor:
rise_your_deadRating: PG
Notes: This fanfic contains SPOILERS for "Yang 3 In 2D." Also, it was my "gift" for winning the author in the
help_nz auction.
Rec: This fic *made* my weekend. The title alone is amazing, as well as the individual chapter/section titles. Those remind me a bit of
Community, where each episode is named after a college course; here, each section reads like the chapter title in a self-help guide.
I also like how non-gendered all of Lassiter's suggestions for making Juliet feel better are. They're all activities--running, target practice--tied into how adorably enthusiastic Jules used to be about police work, back around Season Two. I guess Carlton misses that almost amusing eagerness. Overall, this is really sweet.
Title: Five Futures Juliet Could Have After That First KissAuthor:
daria234Rating: K+
Note: This story fills three comments, so make sure to read all parts. Written in response to my prompt for the
Halfamoon Commentfic Fest.
Rec: When I first saw a three-part comment in my Inbox, I was afraid that I had seriously *angered* somebody with something I had posted, if they were writing that much back. So, I was absolutely
delighted to discover that it was actually a beautiful and PERFECT fanfic, instead.
This author may be secretly psychic herself and looking around in my brain. This story is everything I could have wanted from that prompt, without even knowing I wanted it. Even if this fic wasn't written for my prompt, I would still have absolutely adored it from the first section/intro, which is both funny and real at the same time. I also love the attention to canon detail in this, like Jules fancying athletes.
#4 is my favorite future. Vick for the state legislature! I would totally go campaigning door-to-door for her. (Well, I live in Pennsylvania, but, if I lived in California, I would. Maybe I could when Vick runs for President.) Then, just when I couldn't imagine a more awesome candidate,
daria234 gives me Jules for Mayor! Plus, the Gus and Lassiter wacky private detective agency! It's a great callback to "Feet, Don't Kill Me Now." (I'll assume Gus and Lassie tap dance together in their down time.)
Title: Forms of AddressAuthor:
rise_your_deadRating: General Audiences
Rec: A sweet ficlet. I love the character detail that Carlton *still* has issues with using Jules's first name, even after they're married. I giggled at his reasoning:
It didn't feel like proper procedure. I kind of want to pet Lassie.
Plus, Carlton/Jules hugs are always good.
Title: how shawn learned to knock before enteringAuthor:
_harmlessthingsRating: Unrated
Note: Written in response to my prompt for the
The Perfect Drug multi-fandom comment fic-a-thon.
Rec: A Carlton/Jules story from Shawn's POV. This fanfic makes me so happy. I'm bouncing in my chair! I can hear Shawn's voice when reading this, and I adore Shawn's Saturday morning routine: Cap'n Crunch and
CatDog are the perfect choices for him.
I also like that this author placed the story at some unspecified point in the future, when Lassiter and Jules are no longer superior/junior partners, to remove any power issues or sexual harassment squick. I love how
_harmlessthings writes Jules handling the boys in this story--
all sweetness and venom (heh!)--and how Shawn unknowingly talks to himself out loud. Plus, yes, Gus *is* Shawn's wife. They really should just make it official. (Now, I'm wondering why exactly Shawn started out in this story passed out on Gus's floor!)
Title: In This Light and On This EveningAuthor:
bialy_lallyRating: T
Rec: Lassiter is steady, if strange; and reliable, if rash; and always there for her.Carlton and Jules get drunk, make out, and have regrets. More or less in that order. I like the ambiguity of the ending.
Title: Untitled crossover with NCISAuthor:
misuraRating: Unrated
Note: First story on page. Ficlet was written for me from the author's
help_nz "buy-it-now" option. I think you do have to be familiar with the character of Ziva David from
NCIS to fully appreciate this crossover.
Rec:
misura is my hero for writing this ficlet. The best way to rec it is to give you an excerpt:
Lassiter slammed his hands on the table again. Juliet winced. He'd made her try it once, 'part of every policeman's training, O'Hara' and her palms had stung for hours. Presumably, there was a trick to it.
"I am asking the questions here," Lassiter said.
Possibly, the trick was being too stubborn to care about the stinging. Or the splinters.I laughed at the image. This story is so in-character and so much FUN!
Title: The Year UnderAuthor:
bialy_lallyRating: T
Rec: I debated whether to include this fanfic, because the set-up of the story is a little far-fetched. However, I did like how that set-up made the transition from partners to lovers more plausible than most Lassiter/Juliet fanfics (or any story involving police partners, really), so I decided it was worth the rec. I also like how Lassie and Jules don't get along at first in this fic, because the transition, realistically, should be awkward. Moreover, I think the author captured both characters well, even if some of the POV changes were a bit jarring at times. Overall, though, I like how
bialy_lally writes this dynamic and hope that she(?) continues to post more Lass/Jules.
